Project Info.

BLOOM was an experiment in translating feeling into form. Ibegan with a poem about the tension between holding ourselves together and allowing ourselves to open. I wanted to explore how that feeling might move from language into an image, and what could emerge through the act of translation. The writing became a starting point for an experimental process of visual engineering. I followed its emotional qualities through the relationship between body, movement, materials and landscape. Pressure, softness and release became visual questions. How might a feeling inhabit a surface? What would it look like for the edges of something to give? The images developed through exploration, selection and refinement, allowing unexpected results to influence the direction of the series. The poem informed the images; the images offered another way to understand the poem. Bloom explores that exchange between writing and image-making as a means of self-expression. It gives an inward experience a visible form, while leaving room for someone else to find their own feeling within it.

Bloom changed the way I approached visual engineering. Exploring fluidity taught me to work from emotion, allowing a feeling to guide the form as it emerged. That experiment also helped me translate emotion into music, and became the starting point for how we approached Augusta. What began with a poem opened up a new way of directing.
